The story of the club
How three students in a pandemic turned a 3D-printed plane into Industry 4.0 Club.

2020
The idea for Industry 4.0 Club began in August 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when learning was fully remote and students were waiting to return to campus. In those conditions, three students who shared a passion for innovation, design and digital manufacturing came together, searching for a way to apply what they were learning and turn it into real engineering projects.
It started with one ambitious idea: designing and building their first airplane with 3D-printing technology. The project was more than an engineering exercise. It became a practical demonstration of what modern technology can bring to education and manufacturing, and later the foundation for the proposal to establish the club, presented to the university administration to show the value of a space that brings together students who care about design, manufacturing and innovation.

2021
As students were gradually allowed back on campus under the approved safety measures, the projects grew to cover different areas of engineering. One of the most notable was a foam-board airplane, which called for designing and building a dedicated CNC machine to cut the foam panels of its airframe, giving the students a full experience of design, manufacturing, assembly and testing. They also built a robotic arm that reads muscle (EMG) signals to control its movement, a step that captured the team’s shift toward advanced technology and modern engineering.

Summer 2021
In the summer of 2021, Industry 4.0 Club was officially founded, opening a new chapter of welcoming students drawn to engineering, technology and innovation. It was founded by the students Ahmed Al-Faris, Jasser Al-Jasser and Majed Al-Ghamdi, who led the earliest stages and laid the cornerstones of this student body.
From the very beginning, the club was built and grown by the students themselves, to create a hands-on environment that helps them turn the ideas they study in the classroom into real projects, prototypes and products, and to build practical experience through teamwork and through engineering competitions and initiatives.

A year on
As the club grew year after year, it set a clear goal: to become the first place students turn to when they want to bring their engineering ideas to life. It does that by offering an environment that supports innovation, design and manufacturing, by encouraging students to compete locally and internationally, and by building a culture of learning through practice.

Today
Today, Industry 4.0 Club stands as an inspiring model for many student engineering clubs and innovation centers across the Kingdom. It has helped a great number of students grow their skills and turn their ideas into real projects and achievements.

Being surrounded by mechanical, electrical, materials science, computer science, and CAD/simulation work — all under one roof with access to 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines — taught me how real engineering projects come together in practice, not just in theory. My biggest contribution was on the Shell Eco Marathon (SEM) APME team, competing in Qatar in 2025. I worked on everything outside the electrical, programming, and controls scope: mold design and fabrication, sanding and surface finishing, composite layup and carbon fiber work, 3D printing, and the vehicle's mechanical systems. I also contributed to some of our smaller RC airplane projects. This gave me a rare, ground-up understanding of how design decisions translate into physical, functioning systems — and how to troubleshoot when they don't go as planned.
After graduation
The club shaped how I approach engineering today. Working hands-on with composites, molds, and mechanical assemblies taught me to think in terms of buildability and iteration, not just designing something on paper, but understanding how it gets made, where it can fail, and how to refine it through testing. That mindset carries directly into my structural engineering work now, where I constantly bridge design intent with real-world execution. It also gave me an early appreciation for computational and automation tools as a way to move faster from concept to physical result, something that now defines a large part of my role as Computational Engineering Lead at Buro Happold. The multidisciplinary, "figure it out with your hands and your head" culture of the club is honestly still the closest thing to how I like to solve problems today.
